After the success of the 1980 VCA/VSO performances the John Milson production of Don Pasquale returned to the Princess Theatre, Melbourne in the Spring Season 1981, with a stunning cast of soloists. Noel Mangin had enjoyed great success the previous year in the VSO Pearlfishers tour to Sydney in 1980, he was to also sing in the VSO Faust in the 1981 season, after many years being a principal Bass in Hamburg Staatsoper he would become a much loved and depended upon principal for the company in the coming ‘golden’ years for the VSO. Deborah Cook sang mainly in Europe and the United States and was a great success. John Pickering was to go on to have a long career in Germany and John Wood became a VSO regular. All performances were conducted by Richard Divall with the Victoria State Opera Orchestra and Chorus.
