Jean-Pierre Mignon, a french born director who established the cutting edge Anthill Theatre in Melbourne reworked the older ( and very beautiful) designs and costumes from the John Copley production –bringing a fresh approach to the State Theatre in 1987. British conductor Peter Robinson was music director with a strong cast of Australian singers. The production was performed back to back with Richard Wherret’s new Turandot so matinee days were very busy for those in both operas.
